In this Unit we will discuss Travel and Character. We will see how to give advice and recommendations and describing places. We will examine Past Modals of Obligation, Reporting Verbs and look at Suffixes.

Work with a partner, tell your partner about your favourite place you have visited.

In your book you will read an article by Bill Bryson. He are some quotes from Bill Bryson, put the quotes into Reported Speech

  1. “My first rule of consumerism is never to buy anything you can't make your children carry.”

  2. “He had the sort of face that makes you realize God does have a sense of humor.”

  3. “The remarkable position in which we find ourselves is that we don't actually know what we actually know.”

  4. “I have long known that it is part of God's plan for me to spend a little time with each of the most stupid people on earth.”

Match the reporting verbs below with their definitions.

As previously mentioned, one of the most difficult aspects of Reported Speech can be the reporting verbs. Try the exercise below for meaning then look at the table of reporting verb structures

a) a remark that calls attention to something or someone

b) state firmly

c) announce publicly or officially

d) make (someone) agree, understand, or realise the truth of something

e) impart knowledge of some fact or event to someone

f) give advice

g) refuse to give up or change your mind

h) define and make understandable

i) give or restore confidence

j) make a proposal, declare a plan for something 

k) strengthen or make more firm

l) an assertion that something is true or factual

m) declare to be true

n) express discontent, displeasure, or unhappiness

o) inform with certainty and confidence

p) cause somebody to adopt a certain position, belief or course of action

 

Report  each of these  statements,  using an appropriate  verb from the box.

Geraldine: I will not take part in the new play.'

 

My best friend:  'Don't you ever discuss my problems behind my back again!'

The disc jockey:   'Oasis were definitely the best band of tne nineties.'

 

The fan:  I'm terribly  sorry about confusing  you with George MichaeL'

 

The police officer.  'We believe that you nave been making obscene phone calls to this office.'

 

My friends:  'Come on - you can do the Swimathon with us.  You're just as good as we are.'

 

Mike's brother:   'I don't mind organising  the collection for Mike and Sarah's wedding.·

 

The  team manager:  "I feel terribie  now about  contradicting  Julie in  front of her whole team.'

 

The director:  'let's try this scene a different way, shall we?'

 

 My mother  'You had your tonsils taken out when  you were about nine,  remember?'

Work with a partner, ask them about what they did last weekend and then give them advice on what you think they should have done.
