There are many linking words used in English to express contrast.
Conjunctions: although, even though, while, whereas, (these are used before the clause that introduces the contrast)
Prepositions: in spite of, despite (only followed by a noun or the gerund, to use a clause we add “the fact that”, e.g. despite the fact that he lost…..)
Adverbs: nonetheless, nevertheless, however. (There are many other adverbs such as moreover, furthermore, consequently….to express extra information or results)

The Passive
The Passive or Passive Voice is used for a variety of reasons. Generally we use the Passive when;
a) the action is more important than the subject
b) we don't know or it is difficult to say who the subject is
c) we want to be more polite or formal
d) we write docuemnts that are formal

The passive is very common in reviews as you want to cooncentrate on what is being reviewed and not what you did.
