In this unit we will speak about Self Image and Famous Events. We will examine  Question Tags and "so" and "neither". We will also review the tenses and look at writing an Informal Letter and idioms for clothes.

 

Here are some historical events that many people believe to be true, but never actually happened.

Collocations are words which commonly go together. Using collocations can be a very useful way of learning vocabulary.

 

For example; each of these sets of words can be used to describe parts of the body. Which body part does each set describe?

 

1. Bushy, thick, raised, arched, curved

2. Receding, wavy, curly, straight, spiky, highlighted, permed

3. Double, dimpled, square, round, pointed

4. Heavy, muscular, medium, stocky

5. White, crooked, protruding

6. Silky, smooth, glowing, rough, callused, dry

7. Long, square, wrinkled, freckled, sun-tanned, oval

8. Large, small, almond-shaped, slanted, puffy, squinty

9. Cold, beaming, cheery, charming, broad

10. Red, pale, rosy, soft, sunken

11. Long, pointed, huge, hooked

12. Small, large, low, pointed

13. Full, thin, cupid, downturned, upturned

An idiom is a phrase or a fixed expression that has a figurative, or sometimes literal, meaning. An idiom's figurative meaning is different from the literal meaning.

So and Neither

So and neither responses can be very difficult. Let's just focus on what we say if we agree with someone.

If someone says something negative and we agree with them we can use neither. 
If someone says something positive and we agree with them we can use so.

I'm going to Brazil in the summer.                      So am I.= I am going to Brazil too.

You look nice today.                                     So do you.= You look nice too.

Stephanie has a new boyfriend.                         So does Mary.= Mary has a new one too.

We went to the concert last night.                     So did I.= I went to the concert too.

I would love a coffee right now.                        So would I.= I would love a coffee too.

He will win a prize.                                      So will I.= I will win one too.

They have finished their homework.                    So have I.= I have finished too.

I can speak two languages.                              So can I.= I can speak two too.

He should study more.                                   So should I.= I should study more too.

We could see the mountains.                            So could we.= We could see them too.

My brother had eaten too much.                        So had I.= I had eaten too much too.

Mary didn't go to the party.                            Neither did I.= I didn't go either.

I wouldn't like to do his job.                            Neither would I.= I wouldn't like to do it either.

He won't stop talking.                                    Neither will you.= You won't stop either.

You haven't finished your meal.                          Neither have you.= You haven't finished either.

Mike can't reach the top shelf.                          Neither can I.= I can't reach it either.

You shouldn't talk in the movie.                          Neither should you.= You shouldn't talk either.

We couldn't hear him.                                    Neither could we.= We couldn't hear him either.

I hadn't seen her before.                                Neither had I.= I hadn't seen her before either.

Question Tags are very similar in that you have to pay attention to the verbs that are used.

Try to complete the following sentences.

Complete the sentences with a suitable question tag. Use contractions where possible.

You will read an article on Madonna and how she re-invented herself and changed her image.

Many celebrities change their image to stay fashionable.
