This week we will look at Clothes and Shopping. We will also see phrases for clothes shopping and fashion. We will also look at Adverbs of Frequency, Gerunds and Infinitives.

How often do you go shopping and what things do you normally buy?

ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY

 

Look at the table with some common abverbs of frequency, you can find more about adverbs of frequency on the Grammar Page.

Complete the following sentences.

  1. Our teacher, Mrs Jones, (never / be) late for lessons.

  2. I (often / clean) my bedroom at the weekend.

  3. My brother (hardly ever / help) me with my homework.

  4. I (sometimes / be) bored in the maths lessons.

  5. We (rarely / watch) football on TV.

  6. You and Tony (never / play) computer games with me.

  7. You (usually / be) at the sports centre on Sunday.

  8. The school bus (always / arrive) at half past eight.

Ask your partner 5 questions, beginning with "how often do you.....?"

Uncountable and Countable Nouns

 

For many nouns we use collocations with containers. Which nouns can be used with the following words.

Using the vocabulary above, write down your normal shopping list.

Objects

Many verbs can be followed by two objects – one indirect and one direct object. The indirect object usually refers to a person, and comes first.

 

I gave him a gift.       

him = indirect object      a gift = direct object

 

The indirect object can come last when we use a preposition

 

I gave a gift to him

Rewrite these sentences, changing the order of the objects.

  • Let me make some tea for you.

  • Would you get me a glass of wine

  • I've bought a gift for you.

  • Could you send me the bill?

  • Read the email to me, will you?

  • He teaches adults German.

  • Leave me some oranges.

  • I took the report to Mr Black.

  • Show Grandpa your picture.

  • I gave my wife some flowers.

Choose the correct verb form to complete each sentence.

Gerunds & Infinitives

 

Certain verbs in English are followed by the gerund (ing) and others will be followed by the infinitive of the verb. Some common verbs that are followed by the gerund are;

 

like, love, hate, don't mind, can't stand, enjoy, finish

 

Some common verbs that are followed by the infinitive are;

 

would like, want, need, hope, expect, plan, decide, arrange, learn
